Cotuí sets Guinness Record for the World’s Largest Majarete

Cotuí, DR.- On November 2, 2024, during Festur 2024 at the Hatillo Dam in Cotuí, the Sánchez Ramírez Ecotourism Council achieved a Guinness World Record for creating “The Largest Majarete in the World.” After weeks of anticipation and rigorous evaluation, Guinness officials confirmed the achievement on November 21, announcing it to Eligio Reyes, CEO of Sma Group and the Ecotourism Council. The record-breaking majarete weighed an astonishing 858.95 kilograms, far surpassing the minimum requirement of 200 kilograms of corn.

The preparation involved an 8-hour process and 6 hours of cooking, led by chef Solangel Velázquez alongside 19 guest chefs. The mix included 0.15 grams of ground cinnamon and 0.5 grams of nutmeg, with approximately 1,000 six-ounce biodegradable cups used to serve the dessert. Donations and contributions from attendees, who brought additional pots and cauldrons, ensured the event’s success. Sponsors such as Nestlé, the Ministry of Tourism, and local organizations provided critical support.

To celebrate the milestone, the people of Cotuí will gather at Duarte Park on November 23, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., joined by national and local dignitaries. This achievement not only brings global recognition to Sánchez Ramírez Province but also highlights its culinary and ecotourism potential.
