Haiti.- Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé urged the newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Harvel Jean-Baptiste, to revitalize discussions with the Dominican Republic to address critical issues between the two nations. During Jean-Baptiste’s inauguration, Fils-Aimé emphasized the importance of diplomacy that prioritizes the protection of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic and adheres to international treaties on migrant and human rights. He reaffirmed the Haitian government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens’ rights, security, and well-being.

The bilateral relationship between Haiti and the Dominican Republic faces several challenges, including migration, ammunition trafficking, border security, smuggling, and trade cooperation. The recent dismantling of a trafficking network by Dominican authorities highlighted the need for security-focused dialogue. Strengthening customs and trade relations is also seen as vital for the stability and development of both countries.

Fils-Aimé called for the creation of a “new pact of coexistence” between the neighboring nations, noting that a stable Haiti is essential for a stronger relationship with the Dominican Republic. A peaceful, prosperous Haiti would not only help control irregular migration but also create a healthier environment for bilateral trade and cooperation. He stressed the need to overcome nationalist barriers and reestablish respectful and productive exchanges for mutual benefit.
