Luis Miguel De Camps presents Labor Code Modernization Project to special commission

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s Minister of Labor, Luis Miguel De Camps, presented a proposal for the modernization of the Labor Code to the Senate’s Special Commission tasked with studying the bill. The reform, developed through extensive collaboration, focuses on five key areas: procedural improvements, individual worker rights, recognition of household work, teleworking regulations, and enhanced enforcement powers for the Ministry of Labor. These measures aim to ensure better protection and full enjoyment of workers’ rights.

The proposal was shaped through a tripartite process involving the government, employers, and worker representatives, reflecting a shared commitment to modernizing labor relations. A significant achievement of the reform is the agreement to double paternity leave, improve conditions for domestic workers in line with ILO Convention 189, and enhance labor protections across the board.

The reform, the product of over two years of dialogue involving 100 tripartite sessions and discussions on 700 articles, seeks to balance strengthening worker protections with increasing productivity and competitiveness. Senators of the Special Commission, led by Rafael Barón Duluc and including representatives from across political factions, engaged actively in the presentation, aiming to ensure responsible decision-making on this transformative labor framework.
